What is Search Engine Optimization?

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is one of the most misunderstood marketing disciplines. Articles and books on SEO often include misinformation and outdated techniques. Although the list could be much longer, we've compiled a list of 5 common seo myths . A complete guide to Search Engine Optimization would fill hundreds of pages, but here are some basics.

How search engines work

Where do search result pages come from? When a searcher enters a query, the search engine (e.g. Google, Yahoo) scours its index to find a match. The "index" is a database that holds copies of billions of web pages. The search engine uses a complex algorithm to rank pages that match the search query. Each search engine maintains its own index and uses its own algorithm. You may be wondering how pages get in the index. Search engines use bots (aka spiders/webbots/crawlers), simple programs designed to "crawl" the web and send back copies of these pages to the index database. These bots are designed to recognize links to other pages and sites and to visit those pages as well. Hence the index is an ever changing and growing database that depends on these bot programs "crawling" the web.

Our Search Engine Optimization Process

Keyword Research
"Optimization" is meaningless unless you define what you are optimizing for. You want to make sure you are optimizing for a keyword or phrase that is searched often. At BGH Studios, we provide detailed research on your potential keywords, including monthly search counts and an evaluation of how competitive the search terms are.

Site Design
To show up in search results, a page has to first be indexed. The site must be designed to work well with the bots/spiders that do the indexing. This is not a trivial task, many sites get this wrong.
Pages must also be designed to rank well against each search engine's criteria.

Link Building
Content and design considerations are only one part of SEO. The quantity, quality and type of links pointing to your website are in our experience MORE important than the design and copywriting of your site. Building links to your site should be an ongoing effort managed by SEO professionals.

Measure and Improve
We provide monthly reports on your rankings. Based on results, we continously recommend and implement changes to improve your rankings.
